Commercials: Assignment #1

Motorola Droid Commercials:

We are all familiar with the Motorola Droid commercials. They entertain us with the robot hands, and how they boast about their high-speed internet access. They really are not aiming at entertaining the audience, but they are trying to persuade and inform the audience. This is a new product, so they do not have the luxury of being "cute" with their commercials and they want to inform the audience about the product. They even state that this phone wouldn't win a beauty contest, but it is meant to accomplish tasks. Here is a YouTube clip of one of the commercials. *You do not have to submit clips, unless you feel compelled to.

iPod Nano shoots video:

Just what we need, another cheesy iPod commercial. This commercial is trying to entertain the audience, but frankly it is not entertaining me. Their selling point is rather self-explanatory: iPod Nano shoots video. They do not really need to elaborate from that point, so they show us this white background with people dancing in the background. It is not my cup of tea to say the least.

Adrian Peterson Nike Pro combat:

This commercial is clearly not meant to inform because for the first minute I just thought it was a montage of Peterson's dominance. It turns out Nike is attempting to sell a protective covering to wear while playing. Am I only the only one who believes this is a terrible sales pitch? They use epic black-and-white visuals to entertain the viewer. Do I truly develop scales like a reptile? I have no idea, and I hope Nike releases a follow-up to this commercial to tell the audience more about the product.

Old Spice I'm a Man:

This commercial is meant to entertain, but it also contains a laughably exaggerated stereotype. It is advertising masculinity and how a man should smell like a man. However, they do not shove this topic down viewer's throat in a serious tone like truck commercials, and are somewhat poking fun at it. However, nevertheless it contains an underlying message of a stereotype and how men should be masculine.

This is Sportscenter "Oregon Duck":

This commercial is clearly meant to entertain in a comedic way. Sportscenter can afford to make a comical ad like this because their targeted audience knows what Sportscenter is. It is almost like a appreciation gift to their viewers and rewarding them with these classic comical commercials. Sportscenter is not a new show, therefore they can just advertise a humorous short clip advertising the show.
